BIM Challenge 2020

03-02-2020

This year Van den Berg Bouwkundigen played a leading role in the BIM Challenge of 2020, an initiative of the study programme Bouwkunde Windesheim (Construction Windesheim), and Bouw en installatietechniek (Construction and Installation Technology) of Deltion. After a short and possibly confusing start on Monday, the students, 10 groups in total, had 4 days to reproduce a design by Van den Berg Architects as good as possible. Technically, the BIM model had to be correct and it was checked for that, as well as any requested 2D details; the keystone of a design.  Who could have guessed that a 2D drawing would be decisive in a field full of 3D drawings and models.

Our colleague Gerhard van de Beek was asked to start up the BIM Challenge on Monday and to assess the models on Friday, together with other companies and teachers of both schools. It had become a close battle between 4 groups, who could make best models and the public the most enthusiastic about their model. Unfortunately, only one group could provide the best model and only one group could win the hearts of the audience with their model. These were also the two strongest groups. One group became 1st with the public and nearly had the best model; the other group was a little less supported by the public, but managed to convince the jury with a good model and well thought-out details.

At Van den Berg Bouwkundigen, we were very happy to witness how students have grown in the process and what good models were delivered on Friday. In fact, the level was even slightly higher than last year; a nice compliment to all the companies and lecturers involved for bringing students to even higher levels. Our colleague Gerhard van de Beek was very impressed that the students managed to make a good model with little information. A good showcase for all involved and a nice prelude to an even better Challenge in 2021!
